From Busia to Nairobi: The Journey of a SafeBoda Top Rider

In the heart of Busia County, within the serene landscapes of Butula sub-county, Bujumba location, a young boy named Edwin Ouma dreamt of two things: riding motorcycles and making a difference. Born in 2001 as the youngest of six brothers, Ouma's childhood was filled with the vibrant energy of a large family and the simplicity of rural life. His journey from the dusty roads of Igula Primary School to becoming one of SafeBoda's top drivers in Nairobi is a testament to resilience, dedication, and an unyielding spirit.

The Early Years: From School to Nairobi

Ouma's academic journey began at Igula Primary School, then attended Bujumba Boys Secondary School, graduating in 2017. Despite his academic achievements, financial constraints prevented him from pursuing college. Instead, he selflessly allowed his older brother to take that opportunity, showcasing his deep sense of family responsibility.

In 2018, Ouma made a bold move to Nairobi in search of better opportunities. He started working as a gardener for Rhizen Company, a position he held for four months. His fortunes changed when a Bujumba Boys alumni, Mr. Juma, offered him a job at his hotel, where Ouma learned the ins and outs of restaurant service.

The Road to SafeBoda

Ouma's journey to becoming a SafeBoda rider was not straightforward. He worked various jobs, from a salesperson at Zuku to a waiter at an Indian cuisine restaurant, and even as a delivery person for DEPA courier company. Despite the numerous job changes, his passion for riding motorcycles, which began in class 6 when he would hire bikes from locals, never waned.

A turning point came when a friend informed him about SafeBoda. Ouma went for an interview and underwent comprehensive training that included road safety and customer service. His previous experience as a delivery person familiarized him with Nairobi's streets, making the transition smoother.

Life as a SafeBoda Rider

Working with SafeBoda has been a fulfilling experience for Ouma. He appreciates the company's willingness to listen to its riders, ensuring clear expectations and delivery standards. The commissions are satisfactory, and Ouma often encourages his friends to join SafeBoda, praising its benefits and supportive community.

Ouma faced challenges initially, such as learning to use the app and navigating through town without the necessary permits. However, his honesty and dedication helped him overcome these obstacles. He calls customers to confirm locations, provides safety gear, and avoids careless driving, ensuring high customer satisfaction.

Memorable Experiences and Lessons Learned

One of Ouma's most memorable experiences involved a regular customer, Mr Henry. While picking him up on Harambee Avenue, Ouma was confronted by city officials (Kanjo). Henry, recognizing the situation, intervened and showed his credentials, allowing Ouma to continue without penalties. This incident highlighted the importance of building good relationships with customers.

Through his work, Ouma has learned valuable lessons about the significance of safety gear, which instills confidence in customers, and the importance of good communication. His longest trip, from town to Zambezi, spanning 25-30 km, stands as a testament to his dedication and reliability.

Looking Ahead: Future Aspirations and Personal Insights

Ouma's future goals with SafeBoda include working as much as possible and continuing to improve as a rider. He hopes to make a positive impact in his community through his work, inspiring others with his journey.

Beyond work, Ouma enjoys watching football and movies, with Manchester United being his favorite team. He loves cooking for his family, with chapati being his specialty. His Sundays are reserved for leisure and family time, reflecting his ability to balance work and personal life.

A Message to SafeBoda and Beyond

Ouma's story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the impact of community support. His mother's happiness since he joined SafeBoda is a source of great joy for him. He has managed to help provide for his family, fulfilling his responsibilities while pursuing his passion.

To new riders joining SafeBoda, Ouma advises embracing the commission structure and the ample opportunities available. His experience underscores the importance of timely communication, customer assurance, and maintaining high completion rates.

In the words of Ouma, "As long as my mum is happy, I'm happy." His journey from Busia to becoming a top SafeBoda rider in Nairobi is a story of hope, hard work, and the unwavering pursuit of one's dreams.
